Every time that we read a book we try to imagine how the scenes, the characters and the settings would look like. Our mind helps us in this process and sometimes we are disappointed when we go to the cinema to watch the movie just based on that book and we think: “that’s it? This is not remotely comparable to my mental movie!”.
I’m sorry, but no… you are not the next Scorsese and you would not be able to make a better movie than the one that you just saw.
What happen when you “direct your personal movie” reading the book is called visualization and it is one of the most important phases during the creation of a movie or a video.
People always need to visualize what they are reading or listening, and we do it for different reasons. To visualize help us to better understand things but it is also useful to remember them. The earliest examples of visualization date back to Prehistory, I’m referring to the drawings that have been found in many caves around the world, but there are more recent and significative examples that can help us to understand the importance of visualization during History.
I’m lucky because I have the possibility to live for a period in Pécs, a small and beautiful city located in the south of Hungary,. If you come to Pécs for a visit it deserves to enter in the World Heritage Site located in the city’s historical center, few minutes by walking from the main square. There you can find a great example of Early Christian burial architecture and some well maintained paintings representing scenes of the Bible.
The Holy Bible is not a simple reading, it was written in more than 1500 years and nobody knows how many people gave their contribution to it. As the Homeric Poems it is also the set of stories and legends handed down from generation to generation. From this mixture of different styles and cultures came to life one of the most beautiful books that people can read, regardless of the religious faith.
During the 4th Century most of the people couldn’t read the Bible so they started to visualize it through paintings like the ones that we can see in the World Heritage Site in Pécs. In this way it is much easier to explain the stories contained in the Holy Book and everybody can understand their meaning. We could define these ancient works of art as the first comics because, just as a comics book, they are self-explanatory and even uneducated and illiterate people could easily derive a story to tell to future generations.
Every time that we produce an explanatory video we do exactly the same. The starting point is to understand the project and to do it we have to visualize it, to make it easier to understand.
We are like those Christians that didn’t have enough skills to immediately understand the Bible, but thanks to a well made visualization process we can understand a project and produce a video that clearly tell your story.
